12/21/95 A DAY I WILL FOREVER CHERISH

Aaron Chayne Laibhen "DJ Rivera" & Slim Perfection.  Photo by Renzo Lee Media

Let me just continue with the Credits - Hair & Make up by Dvah HoSang and garments by Designs by Kapri.  If you'd like custom made apparel or in need of a make over, feel free to contact the Simply Said office to get in touch with these talented individuals.

Now I promised to share my labor & delivery story so here we go.  It was December 20, 1995 about 2AM and I began feeling what I would describe as electric vibrations coming from my lower abdomen.  I was awakened by these vibrations and began to look at the clock on the VCR.  This of course being my first pregnancy and haven given the due date of December 16th one would expect eventually the coming of the baby.

Now I began timing the electric vibrations which of course were contractions and they went from 7 minutes apart to 5 minutes apart.  Figuring that this wasn't gas, I went over to my sister's room to tell her that I am having contractions and they are 5 minutes apart.  I was in Hempstead, Long Island at my sister Renee's house so we got in the car and headed over to Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre.

When we arrived at Mercy the ER Physician checked me and said that I was dilated just a "finger tip" (whatever that meant) so I had more than enough time to go to my Doctor.  So we left Mercy hospital and Renee drove me to another sister's house in Roosevelt, Long Island we'll call her Dr. Ruth.  Back in '95 she was a Nurse but now she's a Dr. so the story continues...   When I got to Ruth's house by then the contractions were much stronger, the time now about 11AM or so.  Ruth was busy fixing breakfast for her family and I had to wait until she got herself together in order to take me to Brooklyn.  Now Winter of '95 had record snowfall and we pretty much had snow up to our waists around the time that my child Aaron was born.  Dr. Ruth was taking her sweet time getting everything together.  I waited patiently on the living room couch moaning in agony while an elderly lady who rented a room in my sisters house felt impressed to just sit & watch me and make idiotic comments in Creole. Yeah - so she wasn't helping.

Finally we are getting ready to head to Kings County Hospital, I lived not to far from the Hospital but my keys to get in the house were left with Renee.  So my emergency bag with all things needed for me & baby were locked away.  When we arrive at Kings County Hospital Emergency Room, there's a snow storm outside so of course all the homeless people have made themselves quite comfortable occupying as many seats as desired.  By this time it's after 3PM, I haven't eaten breakfast, it was offered but the contractions were too strong for that and now I am extremely hungry and thirsty.  Dr. Ruth decides to go visit our Grandmother since were in the neighborhood.

Now who doesn't love Grand Ma's home cooking?  I said "Great bring me back some food from Grand Ma" as I pace the ER floor back & forth (I wasn't allowed upstairs because they're were no beds available yet)  So I'm pacing thinking about Grand Ma's good food, It's real food so I know it will give me strength.  After all, I didn't eat all day and that's all I could think about.  Well when Ruth finally comes from Grand Ma's house my eyes widened ready to sit & eat some real home cooked food.  Ruth decided to EAT ALL OF MY FOOD THAT GRAND MA MADE FOR ME, AND COMES BACK WITH CHICKEN WINGS & FRIED RICE FROM A CHINESE RESTAURANT.  Boy oh boy when she opened up that chinese food in front of me, the wings looked like bats to me and I looked at her & said "you eat it"  I can't eat that.  So all I had was a can of Minute Maid Juice from the vending machine and that was it.  Ruth had to go back to Long Island the storm was getting worse and I was told another sister, Elsie will be on her way.

Well by now it's after 9PM and somewhere after that time I finally got a bed and was able to go upstairs.  In a room filled with other pregnant mothers wailing and crying I layed down waiting to be seen.  Elsie arrived and my thoughts to myself were, with what strength am I going to have to push this baby, I ate nothing all day.  However many centimeters dilated I was at this point, the nurses station felt that I should walk.  I wanted to grab them by the neck, but hey let's "walk".

So Elsie trying to be a good sport about things helped me off the bed and we began walking up and down the hall.  I was in so much pain, and did not want to walk anymore.  My sister went to the nurses station to tell them that I can't walk anymore - but those nurses insisted that I continue walking.  I had some choice words for them while my sister tried to calm me down.  Then right about midnight my water broke - splashed right their on the hallway floor.  Elsie notified the nurses station, I was placed back on the bed and waited for a doctor to check me. Now I have always been petite body framed, that didn't change during pregnancy.  When they placed the strap to monitor the baby heart rate, etc., and when they would check my bed and read this monitor, those numbers weren't registering properly because that strap wasn't even on me properly.

By now I am beyond dehydrated, I'm asking for ice chips something to help me.  These people decided no, we're not giving you any.  I look at my sister, she looked at me like, "Peggy there is nothing that I can do."  Well the doctors & nurses were taking too long for me so I started pushing on my own.

Then this Dr. from Trinidad I presume by his accent came in and asked "Do you feel like you need to do the two's?" repeatedly.  I had no idea what this man was talking about, I couldn't even understand him, I looked at my sister, she looked at me and tried to translate.  By that time all kinds of fluids were coming out of my body and I was ready to rip everybody's head off.

They FINALLY brought me to the OR, I have fluids coming from everywhere they wheel my bed over to the OR table and tell me to get up and go to the OR table.  Can you believe this?  I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO STRENGTH, I do not know how on Earth I am going to do much of anything and these people had the nerve to tell me to get up myself and go on the OR table.  I looked at my sister, she looked at me and there was nothing that she could do.  So I muster whatever strength that I have and transfer myself to the OR table put my foot in the stirrups and began pushing.  Now they told me to push as if I was "doing the two's"  that's not hard to do.  We all know that motion, if you're regular you do that everyday, maybe even more than once.

So I began pushing, as I pushed it was as if Earth and Time stood still I do not know how I pushed, I do not know where the strength came from to push.  I just kept pushing with all of whatever I had in me to push.  While pushing - I blacked out - all I could remember is the Doctors calling my name while an oxygen mask was put on my face.  As I came to, I heard the Dr. (the OR Dr. was a woman)  "Ok Ms. Laibhen we need you to push" and so I did.

Then I heard the cries of my son, all 21.5 Inches & 6lbs 13oz of him @ 2:46AM.  My sister looked at me and said "he has your feet."  Like that is the first thing that she said to me when Aaron emerged from my womb.  So the Dr. says "It's a boy, does she know it's a boy?"  then instructs me to push out the Placenta that hit the ground and I pretty much gave the Dr. a blood bath with all of the splatter.  No episiotomy - just the Dr. saying "We're gonna stitch you up now Ms. Laibhen."  With the Placenta splatter she says "I guess I will be going in the showers."  Yeah - Kings County Hospital in 1995 is not what Kings County Hospital's Maternity Ward is today.

Holding Aaron, feeding Aaron, looking into the eyes of Aaron was the greatest joy a Mother can have.  The miracle of childbirth is just that a miracle.  My miracle is now 19 years of age who makes me relive my labor and delivery story each year when his birthday is nearing.  Aaron asks me all sorts of questions pertaining to those days nearing his arrival and bringing him into this world. It's ok - although 19, he will always be my baby.  Now I can't get into the entire hospital stay cause you'll be reading forever.  The Hospital food was gross and I never got my Maternity bag with all my personals for Mom & Baby until the day I was leaving the hospital - yes how convenient, while watching all the other Mom's on the floor with their beautiful robes on, etc.

We all have our miracle stories, yes our children are blessings.  The beauty is in knowing that God entrusted a Woman with the Awesome Responsibility of Bringing forth Life.  I'm grateful and as we are in full swing of the Holiday Season where most Christians reflect on a precious Newborn King born in a Manger in Bethlehem - Aaron and I wish you all the best during this season and 2K15.  Till my next entry...

WHAT BUJU BANTON, BEENIE MAN & SLIM PERFECTION ALL HAVE IN COMMON

Buju's Beautiful Eyes & Spirit

Ok - ladies & gentlemen - guess what Buju Banton, Beenie Man and I all have in common?  I will give you a few moments to think about it (feel free to comment below if you like)...  Ok - there are few things let me list them for you:
1.  We all have beautiful eyes
2.  We all work in the Reggae Industry
3.  We all are Lovers of Reggae Music  (last one & most importantly)
4.  We are all born in 1973!!!!!

Let me tell you about the 70's - I am proud to be a 70's baby, there was a lot going on musically speaking during the 70's.  I know what you're thinking "flower power"  the "Peace" sign.  Maybe you're thinking about disco music - Donna Summer & Chaka Khan.  The 70's was such a nostalgic era to be in.  The music was ALIVE with bands, real music - who remembers the 8 track?  Vinyl and sitting on the floor looking at and reading album covers.  Some of the art work those days were so cooky and colorful.

Do you remember the vans on the street?  All the crazy looking artwork that was on them?  It was cool if you owned a Trans Am Car and so many other notable things about the "70's".  But when God said in July of 1973 that one of the most talented Voices of Jamaica would be born and his name shall be Mark Anthony Myrie (Buju Banton) and then God said yet another Voice of Jamaica will be born in August of 1973 and his name shall be Anthony Moses Davis (Beenie Man)  and when God said another Voice of New York emerging from Kings County will be born in December of 1973 and her name shall be Peggy Laibhen (Slim Perfection) - it was so!  By the way my new website launches this week feel free to visit www.slimperfection.nyc

Let me tell you something about 70's babies - don't sleep on us we are super multi-talented people who strive to do the right thing in life.  I'm not saying that the era as to which you were born in isn't special - but I'm not talking about your era right now - I'm talking about mine :)

So as I approach my Birthday (12/3) Week & Month the celebration begins as soon as December rolls in - I celebrate all month long!!! Every day given is another day to give thanks of course I am beyond grateful each time I wake up and see the sun shining through my bedroom curtains.  Happy to be able to see, speak, hear, write, type, text, smile, love, laugh & work.  God is awesome!

So as long as I have breath in me - the goal is to do, to be, to help, to honor and to achieve.  Till my next entry...

MY STORY ON SHABBA RANKS

90's Shabba Ranks - Still a Major Influence in the Reggae Industry Today

Where do I begin with Shabba Ranks.  I promise to give you a great article on all his many achievements in the music industry, including the records he broke, his influence on other artists and how his music has impacted generations of reggae lovers worldwide.

But this entry is on my story with Shabba Ranks.  Now Shabba is one of my favorite Reggae Artists he's part of the Top 7.  Just in case you're wondering who also has made my list of all time favorites, I will just name a few - well you already know Shabba Ranks is there, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Capelton, Lone Ranger, Mad Cobra - and I'll stop right there.

Okay so when I was just a little girl in my wee teens (smile) all of my family members knew how much I loved Shabba Ranks.  Well for the first time in the States Shabba Ranks was coming to Queens.  He was performing live at the Legendary Q Club this was in October if my memory serves me right and I wasn't even 16 years of age yet.  Now my sister decided as an early birthday gift to take me to this concert.  I was super excited but was not the legal age to get into an establishment such as the Q.

So we went on Jamaica Avenue to shop for the appropriate I.D. that would show that I was 21 years of age.  After taking care of that and doing some shopping that weekend was one that I would never forget.

When we arrived at the Q Club and of course, successfully passed through security we found a nice spot across from the stage and I waited.  If my memory serves me right DJ Roy was the MC to introduce Shabba.  All I remember is watching him jump across the stage with the mic in his hands and he said "I'm not going to a circus, I'm not going to a fair - " and the rest is history.  I screamed, and screamed and had so much fun watching my A-1 DJ do his thing on the stage and of course doing all of his hits at the time.

That was the best Sweet 16 Gift anyone could have given anyone, but I was the recipient and I have the memories.  Now through out the years working in the Reggae Industry I have seen Shabba and watched him perform live.  Shabba Ranks live performances are energy packed and his moves - so tribal.  He's still a sexy Reggae Icon that holds his own with each performance.  So catching him live is a treat.  Yes there was a time where he took a hiatus so to speak from the industry and when he returned - well it was just GREAT to hear him on the air waves again.  In my opinion, musicians may take a break but they never totally abandon their God given talents.

Now as an adult, and not a 15 year old watching Shabba for the first time.  When I bump into Shabba it's always a pleasure and it's always professional and cordial.  I didn't share with him my story of when I was a bright eyed teenager until last year some time; just in the office away from all the people, bright lights and stage.  Shabba chuckled and said he should have been recording my story.

Shabba Ranks - Rexton Rawlston Fernando Gordon, also holds the title as King of the Dancehall, being one of the most popular artists within his era and as an International Reggae Artist who took Reggae music to mainstream and helped broaden it's horizons.  Simply Said Media gives you a 21 Gun Salute.  Just my way of saying "I'm proud."

Now I promise to give you a then & now about Shabba Ranks and list his groundbreaking achievements as well.  Not today but you know if I am going to give you a story let me at least present the Artist in the best way a writer can.

Till my next entry...

NEVER GIVING UP ON SELF

The Thoughts of a Rootsy Woman who takes Pride in her People

Hi there my loyal readers.  I must say as much as you click on a post & thank you so much for doing so.  Maybe, just maybe - take the time out & "follow me" so that I can keep you updated on all things Simply Said and current happenings within our community.  Not to mention meaningful commentary that should enhance or improve your state of mind as opposed to some of the garbage that we either fill our minds with or end up being subjected to.

Allrighty then - let's talk about self.  Questions number 1.
Do you love yourself?  Take some time to answer that question.  Do not confuse selfish desires to loving yourself - there is a difference.  Let's take our bodies for instance.  Sickness can come from various sources.  Some of what causes our bodies to breakdown has a lot to do with what we are putting in our systems.  If you LOVE YOURSELF YOU WOULD NOT PUT HARMFUL THINGS AND/OR SUBSTANCES IN YOUR BODY THAT WOULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOU.  If you believe in the saying you are what you eat - then go by the rule I go by "Everything in moderation" too much of anything - is NOT good for you.  If you want tips on how to "Love yourself" feel free to comment below & we can start a convo from there.

See once you figure out that YOU are responsible for YOUR happiness and NOT others a light bulb will go on in that bright head of yours and by maintaining a positive perspective and/or attitude towards matters - all of a sudden you will begin to see the pieces of the puzzle come together.

Now my topic today is "Never giving up on Self".  You see when I walk in and around the neighborhood that I live in and see a grown man who doesn't appear to have missed a meal, perhaps even overweight to the average 6 foot plus black male and you're asking a woman for money and if I give it to you because after all I was taught to share if I have it.  Let me continue to paint the picture a grown man asking other people including myself for money.  Then later in the day you are sitting on a crate on the corner smoking a cigarette or something else, did I just fund your smoking habit?  Let me further paint the picture - a grown man with a name brand leather jacket on, appears as though he's living quite well AND HAS NEVER MISSED A MEAL.  Chooses to ask for money rather than attempting to use those hands on people skills to fill out a job application - not only did you give up on SELF but you've decided to LEAN on others and are content with just that.

What I hate to see in the community are the petty drug dealers that are still on the corners asking patrons as they enter stores if they smoke - because I guess you can buy a "loosy" from them and anything else that would be for sale.  The decisions that we make in life not only effects you the individual but the people around you as well.  The Petty Drug Dealer has GIVEN UP on attempting to make an HONEST DAY'S PAY.  Therefore giving up on self.

I'm sorry Ladies unfortunately, society, the entertainment industry and some women have given the red stamp approval to have you believe that a stripper's pole, having one, using one, being a stripper aka exotic dancer is a GREAT career choice.  As opposed to learning a trade or getting a college education.  For the younger generation to think that it is acceptable to aspire to be on a pole as opposed to a more reputable career where you are not subjected to being seen as only a piece of meat - well yeah with that scenario - you've given up on self.  I do not consider that as survival I see it as a cop out.

When I walk around the neighborhood and see countless people whose priorities consists of substance abuse (to drown or forget about their troubles), violence (because they've decided to loose control within their troubles) crime (because they've decided to break the law to remedy their troubles)  YES you have lost hope & given up on SELF.

How do we break the cycle?  You can not go by society's fast paced point & click or touch & send speed.  As an individual YOU MUST STOP & PAUSE every day if you could, once a week is great, SELF EVALUATION & REFLECTION IS KEY.  If you can just stop for a second and do self inventory of your life and where you are going with it you can save yourself some serious heartache and stress.  It starts with you, your home, your surroundings and your community.

Trust me, what you do matters.  If you lost hope on the things that matter most to you, than you lost your way and have to do everything you possibly can to return to or restore that zeal you once had on life & your pursuits.

Don't give up on yourself - I haven't given up on you - believe in YOURSELF as I believe in YOU.

Till my next entry...

MY BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER, KING OF THE DANCE HALL - BEENIE MAN

LABOR DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND WITH THE DOCTOR BEENIE MAN
Yes I am late in giving you my holiday happenings - but Thanksgiving is coming and so is Christmas, Kwanzaa and other notable holidays.  During the holiday season most folk spend their time with family, friends and loved ones.  Speaking of family - although we don't have the same Mother or Father, Beenie Man, Ras Moses, The Doctor, The King of the Dance Hall, The girls dem Suga, I can keep going with titles is like a brother to me.  I have known this musical genius for SO MANY YEARS and there is never a time where he doesn't take the time out to acknowledge, chat, catch up - etc.

Usually during his bookings and movements to the back stage area if I am put on Artist Hospitality that day I make sure that he is well taken care of.  Hey it's part of the job, but more importantly if anyone knows me and I have you on my clipboard for artist detail - you are in good hands.  It's always a pleasure to be in his presence and company because he's simply a Real Individual where his humility and humorous spirit exudes from him first and those are great characteristics to have.

Since we are on the topic of Beenie Man and musical genius' - Beenie Man has what we call Artist longevity.  He is indeed an Entertainer full of energy who has mastered his craft.  I could never get tired of being a witness to his performances or listening to his dynamic catalog.

One year at a Kings in Action concert in Queens - I'm backstage specifically to hail him up since he's in my neck of the woods and of course we greet with a big hug & kiss.  Well a journalist was there covering the event and recording footage from all aspects of the event & his tour that year.  So the journalist looks at Beenie & myself and says "Oh my gosh is that your sister?"  Beenie and I both looked at each other and started cracking up like (yeah we all look alike).  She took so many pictures of us, I can't imagine what the caption was for whatever magazine she worked for.

Anytime you come across an individual and you happen to "favor" by the opinions of others or even if you are in agreement; just know that it's a "tribal" thing.  We all our walking maps of our ancestral tracks, bloodlines of generations nestled into 1 vessel, that being YOU of course.  So If we favor okay, I count it all joy.  Music is Life - & Life without Music would be such a boring existence.

Yes I will be working backwards on footage, events then working ahead with great places to go for the holidays.  So while I have the energy to type away - I'll keep the stories coming.

Till my next entry...

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR - 2K14 NOTHING BUT POSITIVITY

Reasonably priced and memories to last a lifetime

Ok here's what I didn't do - I did not watch the ball drop, I was applying mascara to my lashes and before you know it, the time was 12:03.  I did not ring in the New Year with my son - he went into the city to watch the ball drop with his favorite cousin.  I did ring it in quietly as desired.  I did ring it in with a sense of gratefulness and a spirit of thanks for being allowed to see another year.

I tried to adhere to the Black & White theme - my shoe's said it all, my dress said it too, my neck piece was signature and complimented the event.  Thanks Forever 21 for that last minute find!  Trust me I was ready to give up on trying to find the right accessories.  I like sets, but I don't wear ear rings so If I'm going out - I tend to adorn the neck, wrists and fingers.  My rule,  "simplicity goes a long way" and if I'm trying too hard with anything - I just stop myself right then and there.  Let it go, re-group and be practical with whatever the task is at hand.  Let's go back to what went down at Chef Garfield and DJ Roy's 12th Annual Black & White New Year's Eve Ball.

Well, I arrived minutes to 1AM and surprisingly enough Kris Kapone of Camouflage Sound was doing his thing giving the patrons a medley of hits.  He was doing 90's dancehall when I got there; that's always enjoyable for your dancing feet as well as a quick mental stroll down memory lane if you just feeling liking holding a corner and taking in the sounds or pulling your loved one closer to you and bruk wine :)

I also went into Mink which of course is the other side separate from Mangoville Ballroom.  There I found Pee Wee of Pretty Posse holding it down for the masses who made sure they were there before midnight and those like myself just getting there.  Now Chef Garfield & DJ Roy made sure that the DJ's that they selected for both Mangoville & Club Mink will cater to both older and younger patrons so everyone can "fulljoy" themselves.  I know I just made my Rastafarian brothers & sisters happy just now :)  Anyhoo, I went back and forth between rooms, pretty much like last year and had a good time in both party rooms.

I carried my camera, BUT FORGOT MY SD CARD, so my cam has an internal memory - I'll be sure to ask someone like my brother how to pull pics from the internal memory.  It will be interesting especially since I bought the camera second hand.  So I didn't take lots of pics with my cam & I have yet to figure out the settings on my new phone who decides to use flash whenever it feels like it.  So getting pictures this year didn't work out.

Iriedale.com along with 7days7nights.com where covering the event and there probably were some other social media sites covering the event that I didn't know offhand.  Either way I did see the pics I did take on both sites respectively so New Year's Day was well documented.

Back to the music at about a quarter to 2AM the Music Messiah Glama Wayne hooked up his lap top and did what he came there to do.  He brought the Mangoville patrons on a musical journey from old school classics straight up to new school favorites.  Other DJ's that played were Steelie Bashment, Ricky Genius, I saw Carl B Moxie and to end the night at about 4AM Killa Boo of Addie's International closed out the impressive night of musical memories with a mix of current top charters and well loved reggae classics.  By that time I was getting my coat from coat check but could still here classics from Super Cat and so on.

From my vantage point it appeared that all the couples I saw and singles in attendance had a wonderful time.  It was great to see everyone having a good time.  I have been in "Thankful" mode since a week or so before Thanksgiving and it still stretches within the new year.

Chef Garfield, DJ Roy and their staff put a well planned New Year's Eve Ball that catered to the diversity of our community in age and musical tastes.  I didn't sample the food provided by Genesis 1 Restaurant, but I know it was delectable to the palette.  I eat there all the time :)  Kudos to a successful Black & White Affair!

For 2K14 my wish for you is to be a better you, an accomplished you.  In order to do that it requires you to search your soul.  Don't be afraid of this process; without it you can't move forward in life.  You would remain stagnant - and who wants that?  How do you search your soul?  You have to examine your life, my FIRST suggestion for you is to disconnect/detach all the wires that connect you to this fast paced society we live in.  You MUST TAKE TIME OUT & MEDITATE.  I do self checks every quarter to make sure I'm on top of my game with the goals that I set out for myself.  An individual can really get lost with all of the responsibilities and hats that you wear in life.  YOU MUST MAKE GOD TIME & YOU MUST MAKE ME TIME.  When you do that everything falls into place as it should.  Remember though it's a daily process.

In order to be a better you - you need inner strength.  You MUST believe in yourself and PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP ON SELF.  Make this year your year!!!  I hit a milestone birthday in December of 2K13 and I'm so excited about my plans for this year and my intent to execute them.  You'll hear about them on this blog, on the radio, via email and various outlets of which I use to get the word out.

Claim 2K14 to be your year for a better, brighter you!  All the best from all of us at Simply Said Media.
